Phillip Dunlap
Rooted in South Florida’s richly layered cultural landscape, TAPESTRY stands at the crossroads of artistry and activism — where music becomes a living testament to resilience, identity, and shared humanity. Blending jazz, soul, R&B, pop, and blues, the program amplifies voices from LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and Hispanic communities, reflecting the rhythms and lived experiences that define the region.
The evening features The Phillip Dunlap Jazz Trio, led by Phillip Dunlap, Director of the Broward County Cultural Division and a nationally respected arts advocate, educator, and jazz historian. Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Dunlap has served on boards including Jazz St. Louis and Missouri Citizens for the Arts and has taught jazz history and music business at institutions such as Webster University and Southern Illinois University–Edwardsville.
Joining the trio is acclaimed jazz vocalist Leesa Richards, a nationally renowned singer and songwriter celebrated for her soulful interpretations of jazz standards and contemporary classics. Her repertoire spans the works of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Sade, and Norah Jones, among others. Richards has performed with legendary artists including Whitney Houston, Faith Hill, Barry Gibb, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, and Kelly Clarkson, and has recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz.
South Florida TAPESTRY: The Power of Intersection celebrates:
• The shared fight against racism, erasure, and exclusion
• The courage of artists who lived their truth through music
• Jazz as a space where difference becomes harmony
Many voices. One tapestry. One American sound.
