GENVAS’ Café Society is inspired by the real life “beautiful people” and “bright young things” who gathered in fashionable New York city cafés and restaurants beginning at the end of Prohibition in 1933. Our Café Society Pride Series specifically celebrates members of the LGBTQ community and presents LGBTQ artists whose life and work promotes the beauty and importance of acceptance and inclusion.
Lucia Lucas is an American transgender baritone who made history in 2018 when it was announced that she would become the first female (transgender) baritone to perform a principal role on an American operatic stage. The performance saw Lucas playing the starring role in Mozart’s Don Giovanni with the Tulsa Opera. The performance is the subject of the 2020 feature documentary The Sound of Identity, directed by James Kicklighter. Subsequently, Lucas became the first transgender baritone to appear with the English National Opera in London on playing Public Opinion in Orpheus in the Underworld at the London Coliseum. This is Lucia’s debut U.S. recital and GENVAS performance.
